Subject Overview

This course allows you to understand how the world of Design works and what it takes to be successful in the field. Through a variety of practical tasks, you will learn how artists and designers work; develop and improve your practical making skills, and produce your own portfolio to show the creative journey you have taken through KS4.

This course is made up of two different units; you will study one in Year 10 and one in Year 11.

Subject Content

Year 10

The first unit in Year 10 is named component one which is externally set by the exam board. During this unit you will be set items to choose from that will allow you to develop your practical skills. Alongside making products it is imperative that you complete the course work that goes hand in hand with your practical. You will make products, models and pieces of art using a wide variety of materials and processes. These products will allow you to understand the process that artists and designers follow in order to develop creative and unique pieces.

Year 11

The second unit in Year 11 is component two, which is externally set by the exam board. This unit includes a 20 hour exam to produce your final product. You will have time in lessons to fully prepare for this. This unit is to show that you can produce an outcome to a set brief under timed conditions. You will use the skills and knowledge learnt in Year 10 to help you do this.

Unit Content

  • Research into artists work – primary and secondary
  • Observational drawings of the theme (eg. Architecture, Natural Forms)
  • Sample pieces of materials and processes you could use in your final product –
  • Inspired by the work of other designers, artists and craftspeople.
  • Designs drawn to show a wide range of possible items you could make for each brief
  • Development models to work out how to make the final product
  • Final 3D product, which suits the brief, is influenced by all your research and shows a wide range of practical skills
  • Evaluation to reflect on how well you completed the processes
