Sixth Form: Health and Social Care

Subject Overview

Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Health and Social Care is a dynamic course designed for students who would like to work with a range of people including teenagers, vulnerable individuals, children and elderly citizens. This course incorporates a range of assessment opportunities and experiences associated with different health, social care and early years settings.

Entry Requirements

Students are required to meet the Sixth Form entry requirements.  Students should have some interest in Biology as one of the mandatory units is Anatomy and Physiology. Students do not need to have studied Health and Social Care in Year 11.

Syllabuses (Course Outline and Structure)

We follow the OCR Cambridge Technicals Extended Certificate specification. Over the two year course students will have the opportunity to study a wide range of units including;

Year 12

  • Building positive relationships in health and social care – coursework
  • Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care – examination
  • Health, safety and security in health and social care – examination

Year 13

  • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care – examination
  • Supporting people with mental health conditions – coursework
  • Public health – coursework

Assessment is very varied and includes coursework, presentations and practical demonstrations. Additionally, students will sit mandatory external examinations on three of the taught units.

Activities and trips

Students will have varied enrichment opportunities such as visits to local care and child care settings. Students will develop sector specific skills through links with the Alzheimer’s Society, Coventry University, the Capellas Nursery and the British Heart Foundation.

Students are expected to buy either their own textbook (Cambridge Technicals Level 3 Health and Social Care by Sarah Rogers, Maria Ferreiro Peteiro, Judith Adams, Mary Riley, Pete Wedlake (£24.99) or an online e-book (£10+VAT 2year subscription – iOS/Android compatible). This resource is essential for home study and the preparation of internal and external assessments.

Progression

Health and Social Care is an interesting and wide-ranging course that has many progression routes. Previous students have attended university studying a variety of courses including mental health nursing, adult nursing, midwifery, childhood studies, audiology, youth work and physiology.
