Science Challenge – Physics

Forces: The Journey of a Pram

Use your knowledge and understanding of forces to explain the journey of this pram.

Imagine you are pushing the pram and need to catch a bus. The bus is at the bus stop, so you have to run, getting faster and faster. As you approach the bus, you slow down and finally stop.

Task

Draw force diagrams to show when it is:

  • still (not moving)
  • speeding up
  • slowing down.

Key words

accelerate, balanced, decelerate, drag, friction, pull, push, reaction, slowing down, speeding up, unbalanced, weight

To get level

You might have:

Bronze

  • Drawn a diagram to show when the pram is moving
  • Drawn a diagram to show when the pram is still
  • Identified where a force might be on the diagram
  • Labelled a push or pull

Silver

  • Drawn some force arrows to show when the pram is still, speeding up and slowing down
  • Labelled most arrows with correct key words
  • Identify some pairs of forces as unbalanced

Gold

  • Drawn force arrows in pairs to show when the pram is still, speeding and slowing down
  • Labelled force arrows using key words
  • Identified pairs of forces as balanced or unbalanced, or arrows are clearly drawn to show this
  • Estimated the size of the forces

Transition Week Challenges

We have three Science challenges you could try: one for Biology, one for Chemistry and one for Physics.

These are all topics that you will have studied at primary school and that you will study again in Year 7.

You can refresh what you have done before by going to the following links to lessons from the Oak National Academy.

Physics

Biology

Chemistry

Please bring you completed work into school during the week commencing Monday 6th September and pass to your tutor during registration.

Blog: Subject Focus

Every day during transition week there is a Subjects Focus post in the Transition Blog!  Today, the focus is on Maths, Geography and Languages.
