Subject Focus: Music, Science and Technology

Music

Music in Year 7 focuses on you learning the knowledge and skills that will be the foundations to everything you will learn in music moving forwards. There is lots of focus on the musical elements, which some of you may have already learnt about.

In a typical music lesson you will experience listening activities, performing activities (don’t worry you never have to do a solo of any sort) and writing your own music.

Year 7 have the opportunity to use a range of instruments from our Samba kit to bass guitar and also learn how to compose on the iMacs using Garageband.

Some of you might want to continue learning an instrument you have started at your primary or start to learn a new instrument. You are able to do this through the Solihull Music Service. Their specialist teachers come in once a week to teach pupils everything from drums to tuba to voice. Details are on our school website.

We look forward to meeting you soon.

Science

Why do bears have fur coats? Because they would look silly wearing jackets!

This is just a silly joke, but think about bears for a minute. Why do they have fur coats? Why do they hibernate in the winter? People answer questions like these ones about how the world works using science.

The process of science starts with a question, but science is more than just being curious about how things happen; it’s a system of observations and experiments used to ask and answer questions about the natural world. Science is a way for us to gain knowledge about how and why things happen the way they do by using our senses to observe the world and experiments to investigate how it works.

At Heart of England we study the three main areas of science. Biology is the study of living things, Chemistry is the study of materials and how they can be changed and Physics is the study of matter, energy, and the interactions between them.

We look forward to seeing you in Year 7.

Design and Technology

Design and Technology is split into two subjects, Product Design and Food Technology.  You will study both subjects for an hour per week.

Product Design

In this subject you will learn about different woods and plastics as well as the tools and equipment that you can use to create your own products.  You will get to use a variety of different tools including CAD/CAM as well as learning the theory connected to these materials.  You will have lessons in the workshop and computer room so that you can complete research, designing and making tasks. Most importantly, we want you to enjoy your lessons, try lots of new processes as well as learning lots of new skills and knowledge.

Food Technology

During Food Technology lessons, you will get the chance to learn a whole range of recipes and develop your practical skills in the kitchen, allowing you to take home some delicious dishes and recipes.  We will stretch your creativity as well as teaching you about health, hygiene and safety so that your confidence within the subject grows.  You will also look at food theory, exploring different ingredients, where they come from and what they do.
