Sports Roundup: 14 June, 2019

Our regular catch-up of sporting activities tells us about a very wet but successful athletics meeting and a remarkable feat of golfing!

Year 7 Athletics Coventry Schools Qualifiers

Over the last few weeks teams of Year 7 and 8 athletes have taken part in the qualifier athletic events against Coventry schools.  The qualification process is such that a top 8 finish in any event gives an athlete a place at the Year 7 and 8 championships on Wednesday 19th June.  From our pool of 20 students, 10 finished in the top 8 in their respective events and both relay teams also qualified for the finals.  A big well done to the following students on their qualification and all the best in the forthcoming championships!  Euan (2nd 1000m), Eva (2nd Hurdles and 3rd Long Jump), Alfie (3rd, 800m), Freya and Hussein (3rd High Jump), Matthew (6th Shot Putt), Alex (7th, Javelin), Grace and Ellis (8th 150m) and Daniel (8th Long Jump).

Year 7 and 8 Girls Super 6s

Euan, first from rightLast week the year 7 and 8 girls athletics teams went over to the Solihull Schools super 6s to take on the other 12 schools in the borough.  The results were mixed overall but there were some fantastic individual performances and they showed some real promise.  The Year 7 girls competed well too, finishing 3rd in the relay, scoring highly in the 100m and Long Jump with Eva (200m) and Grace Millie (Shot Putt).  Elsewhere, there were personal bests from Amelia (100m), Millie (200 and shot putt) and Grace (shot putt).  Several students competed for the first time and still managed to get points in what was an excellent effort for the team made up of: Eva, Amelia, Grace, Millie, Freya and Grace.

The Year 8 girls’ team with Lilla, Millie, Sarah, Jess, Natasha and Autumn struggled somewhat with the step-up in competition but battled well to come away with some good individual results.  Lilla jumped 4.10m in the long jump and posted a 14.31s in the 100m which saw her total points accumulate to a great number.  Millie threw well in the shot and Autumn in the javelin.  The girls were 4th in the relay heat with a time good – enough to rake in a good points total.

A massive thank you to Georgia who attended the event as a Sports Leader and turned into team manager, an excellent representative of the school in so many ways.

West Midlands Athletics Championships

students racing on track

Four Heart of England athletes qualified to represent Solihull Schools at the West Midlands Championships on Saturday 8th June, in an event which typically sees the very best talent compete head to head for medals and a place in the West Midlands team for the Mason Trophy competition.  Matthew, who competed at the bottom of his age group in the intermediate boys 100m race stole the show with a fine win in horrible conditions, getting an impressive time of 11.16s and earning his call up for the West Midlands team next weekend.  We wish him the very best of luck!

Elsewhere, Lewys finished 6th in the 200m running 26.5s and Euan was 3 seconds off his personal best in the 800m also finishing 6th in a strong field.  Off the track, Lilla competed well in the long jump finishing 6th with a distance just shy of 4m.  Congratulations to all of our representatives who competed so well in what was an incredibly wet championship!

Gaelic Football

Congratulations to our fantastically hard-working Eva who has been called upon to represent the county at Gaelic Football!  After a rigorous trialling process, Eva has been selected for the u12 boys’ & girls’ team as well as the u14 girls’ teams and will be competing in Ireland at the GAA Championships at the end of June.  All the best Eva!

Golf

Antony with a hole in one!
Antony with a hole in one!

All of Anthony’s hard work in training and on the golf course has been paying off in recent months, but last weekend he managed a hole in one!  Year 8 Anthony’s winning ways and top performances have seen him travel further afield to compete at the highest level within his age category and long may it continue!  Congratulations and all the best for your upcoming matches!
