We restart our regular Sports Round-up features from the PE department with the first report of the year…
This week has seen all of our extra-curricular sporting opportunities kick off in fine style with some terrific numbers at clubs and excellent performances in our first competition outings!
The PE department’s Autumn extra-curricular clubs got underway on Monday with opportunities on offer every lunchtime and every evening after school with the exception of Monday when staff meetings take place. We welcome everyone interested to come along, bring a friend and improve their skills, for which we are keen to reward students with Merits for their commitments!
After football training on Tuesday night, Wednesday saw the Year 8 team start their season with a 6-2 win against Lyndon School. The squad, who will train again on Tuesday who will welcome anyone who wishes to be considered for the team, showed good maturity and development to build on their mixed start last year to prevail as convincing winners in a well-contested match.
On Thursday Mrs Williams successfully ran netball practice for 73 girls! Many Thanks to our recently qualified sports leaders who came to the rescue and aided the terrific efforts of the netballers!
Thursday also saw two mini buses loaded full of runners travel to Smith’s Wood school for the first race of the season. We fielded a great turn-out in all the Year 8/9 races where we placed well as a team. We also got out full teams in the Year 10/11s and saw numerous promising runs from Year 7 students. Out of 28 athletes 10 finished in the top 20 to get qualification letters for the West Midlands Championships – excellent racing performances by many!
Stand out performance of the day went to Freya who, due to a slight mini bus malfunction, missed the Year 7 race and instead ran up with the Year 8s and 9s to finish an incredible 3rd place in a sprint finish with the second-place athlete! Massive Well Done to Freya and all of our students who competed for school or attended a club in these first two weeks. Long may it continue!
