One of our Year 9 students, Nancy Baker has been selected to play as part of the England girls’ ice hockey team this coming May.

Nancy has been competing in trials and successfully been selected at the end of each phase to become part of the England girls under 15s ice hockey programme since August 2022. She will be playing in an opening event in Sheffield during May this year.
The young player has already attended one last trial event in early April, missing out on a place travel to Slovakia but getting to be part of the England team.
She has been playing since the age of seven and currently plays for the junior Solihull Barons and the Telford Wrekin Raiders as well as training with adult women’s teams in Coventry and Solihull. “I became interested in the sport since I was about seven because my brothers were already playing,” she said.
Nancy spends a lot of time on her favourite sport, training for four nights a week and then playing at the weekend in matches and tournaments. There is quite a lot of travel involved as there are only a few ice rinks about. Her local rink is in Solihull (Planet Ice) although she also plays in Coventry and Telford.

It is always fantastic to hear about the achievements of our students and Nancy is doing so well in her sport and we will be watching her progress in future. The BBC has also taken note and she is due to appear in a forthcoming item about girls’ ice hockey.
Speaking about moving forward Nancy said: “I love doing it and I’d really like to be in Team GB and play in the Olympics.” We hope so!
