Hello to our 2021 Year 7 Students

Hello!

Welcome to this blog which is specially for our new Year 7 students—yes that’s you!

graphicI’m Mrs Yates and my job is to tell you everything you need to know about starting secondary school and help you when you start here.  I have been working at Heart of  England School for over 16 years and so I know lots of information and am good at answering questions about our school.

Did you know that blog is short for weblog.  It is a type of diary on a website.  My blog will be about what life will be like at Heart of England School.  Over the next few months I’ll blog about lots of different topics so keep checking back to see the latest post from me.  In this first entry I thought I would tell you a few things about my hobbies and interests.

The Secret Garden

I love books and reading.  One of my favourite books is The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson-Burnett.  As well as being a story about friendship, it is also a  good reminder that kindness can make a real difference in the world especially when things seem difficult.

King Henry VIII

I particularly like fiction books that help me  learn about different periods of history.  The  book I am reading at the moment is about Henry VIII.  I love the fact that the author uses a wide-ranging vocabulary which is helping me to learn new words.   My favourite new word so far is orgulous which is an adjective meaning haughty or disdainful.

I try to do cryptic crosswords.  A cryptic crossword is one where each clue is a puzzle.  Sometimes when you work out a clue you learn  something.  So last week I learned that a stilt is a type of bird.  I can see where it gets its name from with those long legs.

I run a board games club at school for Year 7 and we play games such as Scrabble, Uno, chess and Boggle and I’m hoping some of you will want to come along to play the games and meet new friends.

I’m looking forward to hearing about your hobbies and interests and  any books that you would like to recommend for me to read.

Bye for now

 Mrs Yates
