Autumn

Plastics and Electronics Project:

• Developing skills and knowledge of plastics, focusing on common thermoplastics.  Recapping knowledge of uses, properties and ways of working
• Looking at basic electronics and components including LEDs
• Developing independence when using CAD/CAM
• Students will learn how to design for others as well as how to analyse existing products

Spring

Timber Project:

• Developing skills and knowledge of timbers, focusing on softwoods and manufactured boards
• CAD/CAM skills are developed further and allow students to develop ideas for decoration
• Traditional workshop skills are enhanced, focusing on accuracy when making
• Students will look at planning for manufacture and evaluation techniques

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT 1:

35 min paper.  A mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions to assess the students’ knowledge of the following:

• Material properties and uses. Includes all materials used so far in KS3
• Basic electronic components
• Processes and techniques covered so far in KS3
• Health and Safety
• Designing techniques

Summer

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT 2:

45 min paper.  A mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions to assess the students’ knowledge of the following:

• Material properties and uses. Includes all materials used so far in KS3
• Basic electronic components
• Processes and techniques covered so far in KS3
• Health and Safety
• Designing techniques

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the nature of the subject, students are taught the above projects on rotation.  Students taught by Mrs Vaughan will complete the Plastics and Electronics project first, followed by the Timber project.  Students taught by Miss Middlemas and Miss Carrol will complete the Timbers projects first followed by the Plastics and Electronics project.

• The overall % for each student will be generated from the written assessment (50%) and the most recent piece of practical work (50%).
• All students will receive a knowledge organiser outlining the key points to revise
• Websites such as BBC Bitesize and www.technologystudent.com contain a wealth of information (students will be guided where to look in lessons)
• Students will be set revision tasks where relevant, please support by testing their knowledge at home
