A large group of our maths students from every year group have taken part in an annual maths challenge and managed to pick up top awards including gold, silver and bronze. Maths teacher Mr Whorlow tells us about their amazing achievements:

Every year Heart of England School participates in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) national maths challenges, arranged for three different age groups; Senior (Years 12 and 13), Intermediate (Years 9, 10 and 11) and Junior (Years 8 and 7). This year we entered 138 students and enjoyed considerable success, with over half of our students achieving Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates. Below is a summary of our results and notable student achievements.

Senior Challenge

A group of 30 of our Sixth Form students took part in the Senior Challenge and were awarded 1 gold, 9 silver and 15 bronze medals. One of our students, Kevin achieved Best in Year and qualified for the Kangaroo Challenge.

The one-hour multiple-choice Kangaroo challenge is a follow-up round to the main challenge and students are chosen for this based on reaching a high mark threshold. Everyone who takes part in this gains a certificate of qualification.

Intermediate Challenge

The Intermediate Challenge was taken by 48 of our Year 10 and 11 students. They all did well and were awarded 1 gold, 3 silver and 11 bronze medals.

Rosie achieved Best in School, Best in Year 10, and qualified for the Pink Kangaroo Challenge which is for Years 10 and 11 candidates.

Other students who did really well were Alice who was Best in Year 11 and Gavin who got Best in Year 9.

Junior Challenge

The Junior Challenge was taken by a big group of 60 of our Years 7 and 8 students and they were awarded 2 gold, 12 silver, 18 bronze medals for their efforts. Alfie achieved Best in School, and Best in Year 8 and qualified for the Kangaroo Challenge as did Caitlin. Year 7 student Ethan came top as Best in Year 7.

Over 600,000 students took part in The UKMT national maths challenge last year so our students have really excelled in getting so many awards between them. There were fantastic results all round and well done to everyone for taking up the challenge and taking part.
